Water transit is a vital part of life in the San Francisco Bay Area. What should it look like in the coming decades?

The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) is developing a shared vision of the San Francisco Bay Area ferry system in 2050, including the level of service and extent of ferry operations and emergency response.

This Service Vision, approved by the Board of Directors in May 2024, will inform how WETA operates in the future and what changes will be needed to get there. The Service Vision will be the foundation of WETA's Business Plan, which will present the specific strategies and actions required to achieve the 2050 Service Vision. WETA is currently building out the Business Plan, which organizes strategies and goals across six Focus Areas.

Robust community engagement over the past two years invited the public and key stakeholders to help re-imagine water transit and address emerging priorities related to the environment, equity, economic development, emergency response and quality of life in the Bay Area.
